These products are manufactured in the Company's own facilities and by thousands of independent scientific suppliers. Fisher also engages in contract manufacturing and provides pharmaceutical services.

Building on its longtime market leadership in North America, Fisher has rapidly expanded in step with the globalization of research. Since 1992, Fisher has completed 33 acquisitions around the world. As a result, the Company has developed logistical and sourcing capabilities second to none in its industry.

Founded in Pittsburg
hThe Company was founded in Pittsburgh in 1902 by Chester Garfield Fisher when he was only 20 and through an acquired company traces its roots to 1851. Fisher Scientific was the first commercial source of equipment and reagents for the laboratories of western Pennsylvania's booming factories as America became an industrial nation. The Fisher family led the Company for 79 years.

Although Fisher's overseas growth is a recent development, the Company's products and services have been making their mark around the world for generations. In World War I, when the German army began attacking the Allies with mustard gas, C.G. Fisher was ordered to provide equipment for a frontline research laboratory that could help analyze the menace. Mission accomplished. In World War II, Fisher was an important supplier to the top-secret Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. More recently, Fisher shipped a large quantity of scientific supplies to Kuwait to reequip 80 laboratories of colleges and institutes ravaged by the Persian Gulf War.

Fisher Catalog
Fisher serves its customers through a direct sales force and customer-service organization consisting of 3,000 technically trained representatives, many with scientific backgrounds, as well as 5,900 other employees. The Company's most famous marketing tool is the Fisher Catalog, an internationally known product reference that has been published for 98 years. The 2002/03 edition contains 2,656 pages, with 7,000 new products added since the previous volume. Complementing the Fisher Catalog are specialized catalogs for research chemicals, healthcare, bioreagents, science education, safety products, and other categories. These products are marketed under many respected trademarks, including Fisher Scientific, Fisherbrand, Fisher Safety, Accumet, Acros, Hamilton, Microprobe, Protocol and some 200 others.

Online Purchasing Beginning in the 1960s, Fisher pioneered in the development of electronic purchasing systems that enabled customers to buy products quickly and economically. Today, Fisher is the acknowledged leader in providing just-in-time delivery of scientific supplies through systems integration, often by replacing the customer's stockroom with Fisher's own inventory. Fisher's online systems give customers instant access to product and price information and automate the control and replenishment of inventories.

Fisher's enhanced Web sites enables customers to order from Fisher's digital catalogs. Their advanced functionality simplifies the selection and procurement of hundreds of thousands of products and contains a highly effective firewall to protect the security of each transaction. Customers receive real-time, account-specific prices as well as information on product availability and delivery dates as a result of the site's dynamic search functions.

Scientific Advisors
To help Fisher maintain its leadership in serving the biotechnology market and other significant scientific fields, the Company organized the Fisher Science and Technology Council, an advisory panel made up of some of the world's leading scientists.
